Wow!! I could feel your pain and anxiety. I imagine you battled with being angry with your husband. My husband dropped my cat off at the shelter when I was at work because Scooter was temperamental and would sometimes scratch me for no reason. When it would happen, he would say, "I'm dropping him off downtown." I, of course, would say, "No, you're not!"

It was after five when I found out about it so that I couldn't go to the shelter. I was there the following day, waiting for them to open the door. Sadly, they put my boy to sleep right away because he got violent with them. This was a massive test of my faith and forgiveness. It's a story I started to write but didn't. He had been sober for about two years at the time, and like you say, it led to old hurt feelings about when he was a rotten drunk. I may need to write that one.
