Did you know that February first is National Freedom Day?

I haven’t turned on the TV today, so I don’t know if the media has drawn attention to what a special day February first is. If I hadn’t had calendar alerts, I would not have known that it was National Freedom Day. What does that mean, you may be asking? National Freedom Day remembers when Abraham Lincoln signed a resolution for the United States Constitution’s 13th amendment to abolish slavery. I think there should be a bit more celebration of this historic event.

I’m currently listening to; I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelo. I’ve always loved her work but had never read her first novel. I decided to purchase the audiobook, and I’m thrilled that she narrated it herself. It just wouldn’t be the same in anyone else’s voice. I’m sure that she never forgot what February first stood for.

I’m not very far into the book yet, and I’m already enraged by the way black people were treated so long after Abraham Lincoln declared them free. It is such an atrocity. I have never had a prejudice bone in my body, and I’ve always been ashamed that my ancestors could treat fellow human beings so horribly.

Maya survived racism and rape and became a champion for civil rights. She was my kind of person. She was brave beyond belief, a fantastic author, poet, and an advocate…
