I took the NaNoWriMo challenge in 2017. I have a first draft of my only work of fiction. The 35, 736 word document sits on my computer and I haven't done a second draft. You should feel like a winner because you continue to try. Great advice about how to prepare for it. Maybe I should spend this next November finishing at least a second draft. :)
